Planetary Herbals Full Spectrum Rhodiola Rosea Extract Review

(More customer reviews)This product fits the Wikipedia description of increasing energy and mental performance although its composition is unexpected (more on that below). It provides me a boost of positive energy but only slightly and not long-lasting.
The studies don't show a notable nutritional benefit, but Wikipedia confirms that rhodiola rosea is also effective in treating clinical depression. A boost in energy and mental alertness would help battle depression but then I think much larger dosages would be needed.
Suggested use per container is 2 tablets twice daily between meals. For me, the effect of the 2 tablets is good but doesn't last until the next meal, and as yet I haven't tried taking more than 4 per day.
They claim this is a product to take in the morning and early afternoon since it might interfere with sleep (unless you work the third shift). I don't take this warning seriously because the effect has not been long-lasting. The strength of a particular brand particular Rhodiola Rosea is impossible to determine although the composition of ingredients is given.
The unexpected composition is worth noting. Per this product: "Combines an extract standardized to 0.8% salidrosides and 0.8% rosavin with a whole root extract, for a complete spectrum of rhodiola constituents"
This departs from the natural standardized amount of 3 percent rosavins and 0.8% to 1% salidroside, because the naturally occurring ratio of these compounds in Rhodiola rosea root is approximately 3:1.
In other words, all the studies that definitely show Rhodiola rosea root is effective use a 3:1 ratio and this product uses a .8:.8 or more precisely a 1:1 ratio. The studies used a 100 mg tablet. Planetary Formulas uses a 327 mg tablet.
With its 327 mg tablet, Planetary Formulas provides only 86.7% of of rosavin when compared to the standard 100 mg tablets of the studies. Planetary Formulas gives us a bigger pill but slighly less rosavin. Why?
Although we get 86.7% of the rosavin we expected, we get 262% of the salidrosides per dosage as we expected. (I did the math.) Again, why?
Their 327 mg tablets might seem like added value over the standard 100 mg tablet upon which all the studies are based. Also they state, "with a whole root extract," and the fact is that 28 compounds have been identified in Rhodiola rosea. Possibly their bigger tablet contains more of these 28 compounds, but I have no way to be certain about that.
I can't say what the motivation was for creating a product with this ratio. I am tempted to infer that the missing rosavin costs more than the added salidroside. After all this thinking about it, I recognize that the price is favorable per tablet anyway.

Solaray - Selenium (Yeast Free), 100 mcg, 90 capsules Review

(More customer reviews)I have been using 100mcg of the antioxidant Selenium daily for the last eight years. My doctor back then recommended Solaray and I have kept with this brand.
Selenium is as essential trace mineral and functions as part of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione perioxidase. It is bonded to the essential sulfur amino acid, methionine.
According to the FDA's website:
"Selenium may reduce the risk of certain cancers. Some scientific evidence suggests that consumption of selenium may reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer. However, FDA has determined that this evidence is limited and not conclusive".
There is no way of me knowing how much good these supplements actually do. Just to be sure, I have my servings of fruits and vegetables every day!
(I also take 100mg of Grapenol as an added antioxidant, twice weekly).
All's well so far :)

I found that there are several places that sell cola soft drink flavoring for use in making your own cola soft drinks, but many of them don't actually contain real Kola Nut (also called Cola Nut) extract. I am not fond of artificial flavorings, so I decided to try making my own cola soft drink flavoring using real Kola Nut extract. So I went ahead and bought a 1 fl. oz bottle of Kola Nut extract made by Nature's Answer and used it to make my own all natural cola soft drink. The taste was GREAT! I noticed my home made cola soft drink had a little of a caffeine kit to it, which was very nice and smooth. After playing around with it a little, I found that Kola Nut can be used to make a really great tasting iced tea by simply adding 14 drops of Kola Nut extract, 2 drops of lemon extract and 2 tsp of sugar to a cup of ice cold water. Not only does it taste fantastic, but the caffeine kick from it is far superior to coffee and tea. One cup of this cola tea is about as strong as 1 cup of coffee, but it feels much more pleasant. The effect is smoother, not harsh; your body feels sort of tingly, almost euphoric. I've never had coffee that felt that good before. Its no wonder Kola Nut is so popular in Africa. Kola Nut has about 2% caffeine and 1% theobromine. Theobromine is the mood elevating chemical present in chocolate in very small amounts. The extremely pleasant effects of Kola Nut are no doubt caused by its large amount of theobromine. Many sources (but not all of them) say that coffee contains no theobromine at all. If you like coffee, and like the flavor of Coke or Pepsi, you've got to try making your own cola tea using Kola Nut extract. You'll be surprised at how superior it is to coffee. If you make a cola tea using 28 drops, it will taste great and give you an espresso like pick me up without the rough edge of coffee. Great stuff!

(More customer reviews)I ordered this with trepidation. I've never been able to swallow green food mixes, other than Green Magma (which is not "mixed", but just barley grass). Wheat grass makes me gag. Literally--cannot swallow it. My body rejects it and I gag and spit it out. So, over the years, trying green foods trying to find something I can swallow has been trying.
Well, there ya go. This one works.
I ordered it on the basis of numerous positive flavor reviews and I liked the list of nutrients/enzymes.
30 calories per serving of 8 grams= 1 g fat, 2 g protein, 4 g carbs (2 g fiber), 65% Vit A, 30% of C and K, 15% of B12 and Riboflavin, 6% of iron and manganese; organic grasses (wheat, barley, alfalfa, spirulina, spinach, broccoli, chlorela); with antioxidant from maca, acai, carrot, rose hips, beet, pineapple, green tea, acerola cherry. Fiber from apple pectin, organic oat powder, organic flax seed powder. Also L acidophilus, peppermint, Siberian eleuthero root, and sea salt.
The flavor is pleasant. It's like the taste of bitterish dark chocolate bars with a grassy undertone that isn't offputting. It's not like it's a chocolate malted or anything, but it works fine for me. I can drink this. I do not gag. Yay.
I will reorder this. I like the healthful profile and the flavor. Big bang nutritionally for few calories.UPDATE: Okay, I didn't really expect a noticeable effect from this (I mean, I've had superfoods before and didn't suddenly go change the world or anything), but I have actually noticed an uptick in my energy after adding this to my pre-workout smoothie and my pre-chore protein drink. I've been adding it to BSN sytha-6 chocolate protein mix with an extra teaspoon (heaping) of Raw cacao (organic), and it's a nice flavor combo. I think it would be great with a banana, too, for extra potassium (a chocobanana vibe).
Maybe it's placebo. Who knows? But as I wasn't thinking I'd notice a change, maybe not. But wow, I do feel an energy surge in the afternoon when I usually have a slump and I get through my 55 minute personal training session with more oomph.

Muscletech Nitro-Tech Hardcore Review

(More customer reviews)I have tried many different protein supplements over the years and Nitro-tech is the best that I have used, by far. I noticed that several people have complained about the taste and that it is undrinkable. That is nonsense. It goes down very smoothly and has never felt heavy in my stomach, and there is no aftertaste. The serving size is one scoop which I typically mix with 8-10 ounces of water. It is not thick at all, or the least bit chalky. The directions say 4-8 ounces of water. If you are using 4 ounces and find it too thick, add more water. Simple. The extra water sure isn't going to hurt you.
I don't understand people complaining about the taste. I'm not going to say it tastes great, but it does not taste bad at all. I guess I would consider the taste mild. Maybe some people expect it to taste sweet like a milk shake. Better taste comes at a cost, and that cost is calories. I have tried some proteins supplements that tasted great, only to find out it took 5x the calories to get the same amount of protein. Definitely not worth it. Seriously 500 calories vs 100 calories. That was ridiculous. This protein is streamlined to give you the most benefit in the fewest calories. The taste is pleasant, but it's not something that I would sit around sipping on. You need to think about why you are taking it. I'm guessing results. If you are looking for a refreshing, tasty drink, there are better options. If you are looking for an great protein supplement you would be hard pressed to find a better one.
Here are some suggestions if you find it to chalky:
* - Use a blender. 2 seconds max is all it takes to mix thoroughly.
* - Use more water. I use 8-10 ounces.
* - Remember that it's a protein supplement and not a strawberry milkshake.
* - Drink immediately after mixing. If it sits for any length of time the powder starts to settle, then it does get a bit chalky.These apply to any supplements I drink, not just this one. I personally don't find a significant difference in taste in any of the top quality supplements. All I can say is that when you find something that works, you stick with it. After trying many supplements over the years, this is what I have stuck with.
