(More customer reviews)This bottle of Vitamin D contains 250 softgels, each containing 400 international units of Vitamin D3. The bottle is sealed at the top and is mostly light impervious. I have ordered many products from Swansons and have not been disappointed with their packaging or quality.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin (the others are A, E, and K) that is used by the body in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. The primary function of Vitamin D is to promote the body's absorption of calcium, a mineral which is essential for the normal development and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones. Calcium is also important in other areas of the body. Vitamin D helps maintain adequate blood levels of calcium and phosphorus.
A vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteoporosis (weak porous bones) in adults or rickets (inconsistent bone growth with weak deformed bones) in children. Since our milk supply is fortified with Vitamin D, rickets is extremely rare today. However, with women and men living to advanced ages these days, getting enough Vitamin D is essential to good bone health in seniors. It is not enough to just take calcium supplements, as calcium will not be absorbed without the synergistic effect of Vitamin D.
Excessive doses of vitamin D can result in increased calcium absorption from the intestinal tract. This may cause increased calcium resorption from the bones, leading to elevated levels of calcium in the blood. Elevated blood calcium may then cause calcium deposition in soft tissues such as the heart, kidneys, and lungs. This can reduce their ability to function. Kidney stones, vomiting, and muscle weakness may also occur due to the ingestion of too much vitamin D.
The current recommended daily allowance for Vitamin D (for people aged 7 to 50 is 200 International Units (IU). People over the age of 50 may take 400 IU's daily), and those over 70 can take 600 IU's daily. The RDA's of Vitamin D is currently being evaluated, with many nutritionists advising larger daily doses of the vitamin. There is also (newer) research which suggests that Vitamin D may prevent cancer.
Vitamin D is also known as the "sunshine vitamin" because the body manufactures the vitamin after being exposed to sunshine. Ten to 15 minutes of sunshine just three times weekly is adequate to produce the body's requirement of vitamin D. By the way, getting too much sunshine will NOT cause an overdose of Vitamin D.

(More customer reviews)This has minimum 5% ginsenoside content, which is the ingredient you want when you are taking ginseng. Many ginseng pills have much less ginsenoside content, some even at 1 or 2% which is basically useless.
I have done quite a bit of Googling and found that this brand is made of American Ginseng. I am Chinese and have talked to several herbalist. The general belief is that the American Ginseng is more "gentle". You may find higher ginsenoside content, up to 8%, in pills that are made from Korean Red Ginseng. But some herbalist warns against use of red ginseng with older people, or people with heart issues.
I bought this for my 93 year old Grandma. She will not take the Korean Red Ginseng products because she can notice faster heart beat. But she is OK with this product.

(More customer reviews)I love these little packs! In the past when I've tried energy drinks or other energy pills, I get jitters and when it begins wearing off, you have a "crash" and end up feeling worse than if you just skipped them altogether.
There are three pills per pack which I love because then I can better control the dose I need at the time I take them. I don't take them every day but when I need them, I take them one at a time about 30-40 minutes or more apart. Lots of times, I end up only needing two of them. It gives me long lasting energy with no crash, no jitters and I've never had them interfere with my sleep or make me feel nervous and edgy.
I don't know what the other reviewer was referring to about nutritional info because I easily found it on the back of every single pack of the pills. I like the fact that I don't get the display box which I would have to pay extra postage for just so I could throw it in my trash can.
Bottom line: They WORK! The price is great and because they come in individual packets, you can take them, sealed and protected, anywhere. I've even taken these on rafting trips and never had them get soggy and they take up no room at all in my pack.

When I took the recommended four daily, I didn't sleep well, probably due to the very high B-12 content - 800 mcg or 13,333% of the daily value and the Panax Ginseng. The 15 mg of Ginseng is standardized for 7% ginsenosides.

(More customer reviews)I have taken "NOW" licorice daily since 2003, as an aid to digestion and for relieving stomach cramps. It is also useful as an immune booster or as an adjunct to any herbal combination used against cold, flu, or digestive system complaints. In Chinese medicine it is considered a "minister herb", which are seen to make other herbal medicines more available to the body. The other minister is ginger, which gives me indigestion if I take too much of it or too often. Licorice generates moisture and tonifies and invigorates ch'i [the life force] according to Chinese medicine.
I had been warned that it might raise my blood pressure and produce a potassium deficiency if it was taken for more than a week. I MONITOR BLOOD PRESSURE 4-6x daily and have not noticed any increase taking 6-8 capsules per day. Also, added to any tea it is very effective against dry coughs and aids in making them productive while settling the stomach. Its taste is complementary and almost invisible as long as you don't add more than 2 capsules per full cup of tea. Overall, NOW LICORICE is an outstanding product, effective against coughs, stomach complaints, viruses, flu like ailments, and much more. A very good value.
