My first 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D test result during winter was 34. ("Normal" is 76-250.)
My doctor suggested 1,000 IU per day and to get outside more often. Dr. Hollick, the world's leading expert on Vit-D, advises his new patients who are low to take 50,000 IU every week for about eight weeks, and then 50,000 every two weeks. I went with Holick's advice. My doctor was advising me to get outside during the winter when the sun is at the wrong angle for Vit-D, and completely useless.
I was thinking about getting a $500 Vit-D lamp, but decided to try supplements first. (Supplements fail when you have a problem with your intestines which prevents proper absorption.)
I went to my local vitamin supplement store to find Vit-D. The best they had was bottles of 1,000 IU just like the drug store. I asked if they had 50,000 IU and the lady about flipped her wig, starting a lecture about how Vit-D is fat soluble, yada, yada, yada. But the next week they were expecting a shipment of their heavy duty 4,000 IU Vitamin D. There aren't too many suppliers of 50,000 IU; you may only be able to find it online.
My last 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D test result in spring was 107. That's about a 3x increase in less than three months! I took one of these high-powered tablets each week and also got out in the sun for about half an hour once a day from 12 pm - 2 pm as often as I could. That was always without sunscreen, but wasn't very often, and only my arms and face got sun, so I attribute the increase in Vitamin D count primarily to the tablets.
The bottle says to make sure your doctor is aware of if not directing your use of this high-level dosage. (Compared to the 400 IU that the government wizards think is sufficient, 50,000 IU is off the charts.) I didn't bother, because my doc doesn't educate himself on the latest research. I just made sure I got a new test within three months of starting on the high dosage to avoid toxicity.
Hand joint pain has gone. Some books say low Vitamin D can cause joint pain. I don't know if mine went because my Vit-D count was raised.
I advise anybody taking this without their doctor's direction to read everything they can on Vit-D first. People with some conditions are better off not taking Vit-D. Amazon has about six good books on Vitamin D.
The price is incredible. Only about $8 to get my Vit-D level back to normal! Why wait longer than necessary by taking lower dosages? Hollick says there's no benefit from taking a smaller dosage more often. Taking one tablet once a week is no hassle.
This has got to be the best vitamin supplement I've ever bought in my life. So many other vitamins I took I couldn't tell if they were doing anything. With this one, however, I have the scientific data to prove it.
One thing to note, though, is the Vitamin D from tablets stays with you half as long as the Vitamin D you get from the sun. I have not stopped getting out in the sun. In fact now I get out in the sun (without sunscreen) as often as I can (for only 30 mins per day).
I think I'll keep taking this stuff till my level is 250. I may go higher; I don't know where they get that 250 is normal. Is it from the same "experts" who say 400 IU/day is enough?
Note that Vit-D has a half life that is surprising low. If I were to stop taking this supplement and avoid all sun, my Vit-D level would probably return to 34 in a few months. I think you've got to retest regularly.
I recommend D3 Extreme to get your Vitamin-D level back to a healthy level as quickly as possible.
