According to the article "Magnesium bioavailability from magnesium citrate and magnesium oxide" in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Vol 9, Issue 1 48-55, Copyright © 1990 by American College of Nutrition Magnesium oxide is not an absorbable form of Magnesium. Magnesium citrate is absorbable form according to the research. If you would like to read the research yourself it is available on scholar.[...].
On the other hand, my wife who is pregnant felt relief from her muscle cramps which were not responding to increased potassium intake(magnesium is required to utilize potassium) and she say's that these pills did the trick.
UPDATE 3/12/10: As it turns out, Boron, which is an ingredient in these pills, decreases losses of magnesium by an unknown mechanism. So she is probably not absorbing the Magnesium oxide, but the boron made her lose less magnesium to the point that what she was getting from her diet became adequate.
