(More customer reviews)Along about the Fall of 1970, I was at Stanford University with a lot of free time on my hands and I became deeply interested in nutrition and physical fitness. Caroline Isaacs, a graduate student there at the time was instrumental in furthering my growing interests. In any case, I had come through some weight loss problems and crash dieting and I became interested in proper nutrition. Through that interest, I ran into a series of readings with regard to the benefits of vitamin C in the diet, first through a book by Adelle Davis and later through Linus Pauling's book on "Vitamin C and the Common Cold."
Up until that time, I had considered colds to be a natural human experience, along with a few cases of flu and things of that sort. Everybody gets them, don't they? I'd have at least three or four colds each winter season and it would be a rare winter when I didn't come down with at least one case of the flu. It was just normal, wasn't it? Well, I learned that not everybody thinks it is normal and some people think that colds and related illnesses can be prevented altogether. As such, I began taking granular vitamin C on a daily basis. It was somewhat hard to find, but I purchased a one-liter can at the Stanford bookstore. I religiously took about a gram a day for the next several years. Well, I suffered no colds or flu, or any illness of any kind, for the next eight years. The difference was astonishing! I just couldn't believe it. This was information available to anyone!
OK, let me analyze this. I probably started with a long-term vitamin C deficiency which I had developed over many years and I was getting my run of colds and influenza as a result of it. When I started taking the C, it gave my immune system an immediate boost. Afterwards, I probably gradually began rebuilding my depleted tissues and I became more and more resistant to illnesses. Finally, when my tissues were saturated with vitamin C, such heavy doses were no longer required. Now, if I just met the minimum daily standards (actually, I like to take more) my saturated vitamin C condition might be maintained at a very high level. Well, it's now been 39 years and I've had practically no colds and I can't even remember the last bout of flu. Was it due to the intake of supplemental vitamin C? Of course it was!
In any case, I always try to maintain a supply of vitamin C crystals or powder at hand. My present supply is a one pound (16 ounce) jar that I purchased at Trader Joe's. That jar is now getting depleted so I'm looking around for more, but I'm in no particular hurry. I found this Swanson Vitamin C Powder and that should do the trick. I don't care what brand it is. Vitamin C is vitamin C. My only question is if it's pure vitamin C. And I want it in the granular crystals form or powder form. In that way I can easily mix it with water, fruit juice or whatever.
