What got me started/scared was a fasting total cholesterol measurement of 246mg/dL. I looked around for alternatives to the usual pharmaceutical statins and chose to take 2-10mg policosanol (+ 30mg CoQ10) tablets a day and 4-500mg (a total of 2000mg per day) capsules of artichoke extract (both from Source Naturals). After 6 weeks, I went in for a second fasting blood work to see what the results were if any. I went down to 183mg/dL!! Of course, "the mileage may vary," which is to say, everyone's physiology is different. Anyway, that is my experience. By the way... at the time, I was not taking any fish oils. Also, there has been evidence of policosanol diminishing Co-Q10 levels in the body, hence the additional amount of 30 mg in each tablet to protect heart muscle.
I did see all the literature about policosanol being merely a placebo, and yes, I did take the artichoke leaf extract in conjunction with the 20mg of policosanol (I probably should have just done one at a time as an experiment on myself to see the effects), but there WAS a positive change in my total cholesterol measurements when I used both.
Follow directions on the bottle: take with food.
Do not use if you have liver, gall bladder, or bile duct problems and the usual "pregnant, nursing, etc." warnings.
