(More customer reviews)The best form of cod liver oil is fermented cod liver oil (FCLO). Fermented cod liver oil has not been subjected to any high heat processing which destroys vitamin content. That is unique so far in the industry.
Fermented cod liver oil is much higher in vitamins A, D and K2 without the additional of synthetic vitamins. Significantly lower doses of vitamins A and D from FCLO may be needed as compared to synthetic versions of these nutrients which do not contain the all-important cofactors which may enhance the body's uptake and usage.
Cod liver oil is also rich in the omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA.
The dosage is usually 1 teaspoon daily for adults, and 2 teaspoons daily for those fighting serious illness.
This product is considered as a superfood rather than a supplement and is also considered by the Westen A. Price Foundation as a far superior source of Omega 3s compared to fish oil. (Which they explains is always heat treated and heavily processed, as well as not containing vitamins A, D and K2.) They also recommend that cod liver oil always be combined with a diet containing whole foods and good sources of healthy saturated fats such as butter or coconut oil.
FCLO is more expensive than other cod liver oils, but it is also a far superior product. Dr Sherry Rogers explains that cod liver oil is crucial for the control of over 1000 genes as well as repair of the mitochondria.
Green Pastures do non-emulsified and emulsified version of FCLO in a variety of different flavours. All the flavours are good and take away any fishy taste completely, but I have to say I am not at all a fan of the emulsified ones. The one I have in my fridge now is a gloppy mess with the most horrible grainy texture. I can't wait till that bottle runs out and I can switch to the lovely liquid FCLO I have waiting on my shelf!
I don't know if mine went weird and this isn't usual, but mine is nothing like the nice gel or jelly type product I'd hoped for. It almost makes me gag. I'll only be buying the liquid ones from now on and can't recommend the emulsified FCLO at all.
I'd worried with this product about it maybe causing a burning sensation but I have only experienced that once, and only very mildly.
Overall this is a great product and far superior to fish oil or regular CLO and I'm really happy that this one company is now making this traditional superfood again!
