(More customer reviews)Transdermal applications of Swanson Ultra Magnesium Oil Spray (see my review for details on uses and benefits of that Magnesium Chloride brine) have come to be miraculously effective for me as an immediate necessity to relieve difficult symptoms like cramps; and as a long term, gradual build up of magnesium in my system (which will prevent these symptoms at the primary cause level). As backup, alternate input, I've continued using oral Magnesium Oxide (this product was chosen due to the miracle of it having NOTHING in it except Mag Oxide, though I also sometimes take tablets for quick convenience). My preference of Mg Oxide is personal; it might not work for others as well as it does for me (a diarrhea side effect from large doses can be an issue for some). Dr. Carolyn Dean's book, The Magnesium Miracle provides helpful detail on current speculations of bio availability of oral supplements, including Mg Oxide (though I'm convinced that accurate conclusions on bioavailability have not yet been determined).
To more comfortably explain why I prefer Mg Oxide, I'll include an excusatory preface.... It's almost strange how we've developed a cultural phobia about facing the facets of feces... which could be seen as "sacred fertilizer" if you work that phrase out of the slang, "Holy Sh..." (Sacred Fertilizer was coined by Mya Gem, a character in my sci-fi series, the Books of Gem). Recently, I sent an E-mail with most of the content in this review to Dr. Carolyn Dean, to which she replied with a few LOL's and a comment that she might quote me on some of it. Most of the composition was inspired by Dr. Dean's recent blog entry on bowel movements [which I recommend reading], in which she gave an analogous reference for the currently speculated range of healthy size, consistency, and frequency (a ripe banana eliminated 2 to 3 times daily).
In my E-mail, I admitted to holding a few unorthodox views of regularity and toilet bowl content analysis. I noted that a decade ago [it was actually 2 or 3 decades] I had a severe bout of constipation and went to the library in Portland, OR (where I lived at the time) and read 6 medical books on bowel and intestinal tract workings. One of the medical profession beliefs which surfaced in that reading was that for some individuals every-other-day is an acceptable frequency, and that if a person had become adapted to that, it might not be a good idea to attempt to force a change to a daily regularity [current thoughts about 2 or more times daily had not yet been heard of]. That bit of information served me well over the years to avoid excess anxiety over missing a day.
I realize that today's holistic concepts are leaning toward multiple times daily being essential, combined with the concern about toxicity. In some ways I agree with this current view (especially given the easy, natural way mag ox works with intestinal function); but I have questions about some of these concepts when presented as accepted medical dogma for everyone. [Dr. Dean replied with use of the term "range" rather than dogma, which works for me!]
Since the time of that six book study, I've read and observed anything I could find (I have a "healthy" curiosity about body maintenance, and as Dr. Dean noted and I fully agree, bowel function is one of the main keys to health). I've recently discussed findings and theories on this subject with my friend, holistic doctor BJ Ferrell who owns the Wellness Center in Canon City, CO.
I believe that there might be different varieties of types of healthy regularity and recommended waste content "styles" which would be normal for different individuals.
The type of "diarrhea" I'm welcoming temporarily (from Mg ox dosage of 1500 - 1000 mg daily, with half the dosage taken evening and morning) appears very different from true diarrhea. I won't be able to detail this adequately here, but I'll note that I'm pleasantly impressed with the lack of any type of typical dehydration side effect, in fact with the opposite effect of a greatly improved balance of water retention accompanying my current mg ox workings. (I've always tended toward diuretic effects no matter what I eat, and rarely if ever have even slight excess of water retention. I always drink plenty of H2O and use adequate sea salt, a la Dr. Batmangelidj's water cure theories, Obesity Cancer & Depression: Their Common Cause & Natural Cure).
Somehow the overall feel of the Mag Ox induced increased speed and efficiency of flow of contents through the intestines seem to be "doing something" (of benefit), instead of what is normally assumed of quickly ridding rejected mg, or of losing nutrient absorption due to a too rapid elimination. I sense that I'm losing nothing needed in nutrient absorption... good riddance soybeans!* I'm also speculating that when severe mg deficiency is endured over decades the person (especially one with a lifetime of hypo functioning liver like me) might benefit from several months or more of this type of what I might term non diarrhea. I think it's possible this process could give an intense, thorough, possibly vitally needed cleansing. Possibly a "healthy" amount of time is needed to dissolve and release years of sludge, deposits of calcium, and whatever else from intestinal and bowel walls and tissues. Possibly a longer term, fast flushing process such as this is a prerequisite of allowing the mg to slow down its transit and begin the next phase of a built-in priority system for changing phases of healing and strengthening.
Strangely this rapid elimination process is comforting and healing, for the time being, as long as I keep it "liquid" or "loose" at a certain level, and with a certain amount of what feels like healthy, even pleasant gas percolation inside the intestinal tract... maybe from the oxide being released to O2? I back off on the mg ox dosage when/if the gas becomes uncomfortable (Anise oil helps that until the lower dosage kicks in).
This will sound really strange and off the wall, but in addition to the above seeming benefits of mg ox "diarrhea," somehow the rapid, fluid flow of intestinal contents from ingestion to elimination feels as if it is pulling Kundalini energy from above the crown chakra through the central body core and out through the "ground," in a way of healing or strengthening the body and soul linking, in a process which feels phenomenally powerful... possibly even intended from a spiritual angle. [It might be wise to recall that I'm a parapsychologist, metaphysician, and sci-fi writer, LOL!]
At this point, though, I wouldn't want to recommend this process to anyone other than a person with my debilitated condition and age advancement, with a seasoned capacity to observe and experiment with myself.
Doc BJ agrees with what I've said here and I'm thinking that at some point this method (if I can prove any type of benefit over potential harm) might be added as a recommended one to other varieties of healthy assimilation and elimination. There's more to this, but I can't write more detail now, for which you will probably thank your lucky stars!
It's also possible I'm "full of sh.t"; it wouldn't be the first time!
Full of whatever,
Linda Shelnutt
