(More customer reviews)I find this far more helpful than melatonin, which is a further removed precursor to what your body makes to make you sleepy. 5-HTP is a closer precursor to that - i.e., it's more of what your body has and uses to make you sleepy naturally. Jarrow is a pretty good quality supplement maker, compared to others - consistent quality and reasonable competitive cost. I've recommended this to several other people who also found it helpful. When you get older, many people's bodies make less of the stuff that helps you to fall asleep and sleep well. This helps the body to synthesize the proper amount.
In response to other comments here: 5-htp is not primarily a mood supplement - except that getting enough quality sleep will sure help anyone's mood, almost. If you want something to help a continued down mood (besides working on the internal and environmental possible variables, and sufficient full-cycles sleep), then try st. john's wort or holy basil (new chapter, best one) - this is primarily used to help your sugar/insulin levels normalize (in non-diabetic or hypoglycemic people) so it helps reduce your sweets and junk food cravings (especially if you take a good b-complex as well). If you have a good integrative internist MD, or a good ND, he/she should be up on and able to advise you knowledgeably regarding which supplements to help with what, in light of your own unique biochemistry, medications and general health issues.
