I've been taking wheat grass for years with some success. It can contribute to good health but it's not a magic bullet. Apparently, wheat grass has the same affect as green vegtables in lowering the amount of acid (raising the pH) of your body chemistry slightly. When your body is in an acidic state, it promotes disease (most of the bad ones we're all likely to eventually die from). When your body is in a more alkaline state, it can release toxins naturally and do all of the things your body does more easily. This CAN contribute to weight loss in two ways.
First, your body stores toxins in your fat cells in order to protect your organs. Your body is motivated to keep the toxins there so they don't make you sick. This is one of MANY reasons why it's difficult to loose weight. By helping your body achieve a more alkaline state, it makes it easier for your fat cells to release the stored toxins. This can be bad in the short term (this is a way to detox your body). All of those toxins can make you nautious and give you a headache. It might be a good idea to slowly increase the quantity that you take so as to detoxify your body more slowly. And, this may be common sense, make sure you drink lots of water (a good idea whether you take wheat grass or not) to help your liver & kidneys get rid of all of those toxins that are now in your bloodstream. If you start feeling crappy after you start taking this, it's probably a sign that it's working but you probably took too much too fast. Once you finish the detox process (usually after a couple of days), then you can feel a noticeable increase in energy and just feeling more healthy. It's also easier to exercise those pounds off because your body isn't QUITE as motivated to hang on to those fat cells since they don't have as many toxins in them. Again, you still need to do the work to loose the weight but this can help your exercise be more effective.
The second way that it can help you loose weight is by curbing hunger SLIGHTLY. Again, it's not a magic bullet but it definately helps. I've heard theories that plants that are high in nutrients stimulate your brain to feel fuller, faster (and with much less calories). Green, leafy veggies (like spinach) are high in nutrients as is wheat grass. But, it only helps a little bit. You still need to disciplne yourself towards eating low-fat protein sources, lot's of fruits & veggies and no refined carbs. Wheat grass will help you out with all of this but it's a waste of money if the majority of your diet is fast food, potato chips & Oreos.
Anyway, I take 2 heaping tablespoons per day of the powder in water. I think it's more effective if you take it on an empty stomach. Some people can't stand the taste of the powder but it doesn't bother me. You might try a smaller bottle of the powder to see if you're sensitive to the taste because it is cheaper than the capsules. If you decide to make this a long-term supplement, the cheapest way to buy it is in the largest bottle (24oz). Amazon is cheaper than the manufacturer's website (and is, of course, a reputable vendor) but you can find better deals if you search the internet.
I have tried several brands and The Pines powder seems to dissolve easier than most. It's also competetive price-wise and seems to be a very ethical, organic company. I experiment with other brands once in a while but I keep coming back to this one because I'm very happy with it.
