(More customer reviews)I've lifted weights for almost 25 years, so have been through more than my fair share of gloves, and these are the best I've found so far.Let me explain why:
1. VENTILATION = COMFORT. Open back, so your hand doesn't get sweaty. This is the main downfall of many all-leather gloves which are a lot more costly and impressive to look at and feel in the store, but are rendered unusable in the gym due to the lack of adequate ventilation. You DON'T want sweaty hands while lifting!
2. DURABILITY. The neoprene material has an excellent grip as well as excellent cushioning, and the grip lasts and lasts. I find that most leather gloves wear out quickly: all the sweat from your hands soaks through and eventually makes the leather hard and smooth on the outside after a few months, so you lose all the gripping power. Also, sweat-hardened leather tends to get too stiff and hard and thin to provide adequate cushioning. Dried out leather also becomes brittle and tears easily after a few months. In fact, because of those reasons, neoprene is now my material of choice for weightlifting gloves.
3. CONTROL. Wearing gloves like this, your fingers are left largely free---totally different feel than a heavy glove where half the length of your fingers are encased in bulky, sweat-inducing leather. Especially if the leather gloves are still new, then your fingers feel half immobilized, very unnatural and uncomfortable.
4. PRICE. You can get a decent pair of neoprene gloves like these for around ten bucks or less at most sporting goods stores. Comparably priced leather gloves are usually extremely flimsy or uncomfortable.
GENERAL CAVEAT/ADVICE: use weightlifting gloves only with heavy pushing exercises like weighted dips, bench presses and military presses. For heavy pulling exercises like weighted pullups, cable pull-downs, and cable/barbell rows, I recommend using lifting straps which will not only take the strain off your wrists (reducing risk of carpal tunnel syndrome) but provide more than enough gripping power to make gloves redundant. For arm exercises like curls and triceps presses, it's better to go gloveless in order to strengthen your grip and forearms.
