(More customer reviews)There are a lot of fiber supplements on the market and I've tried a bunch of them. When I had a problems with ulcerative colitis, this is the one I settled on after doing a fair amount of research. It also agreed most with my body and hide the ideal ratio of soluble and insoluble fiber.
As a former biochemist and physiology teaching fellow, I appreciate the benefits of having the appropriate amount of fiber. Some of these benefits include lower cholesterol and less colon cancer risk. Not to mention, preventing the formation of hemorrhoids or helping with the symptoms of them.
While it is true there are other fiber supplements such as Citrucel that taste better and may not cause gas, the natural products may help in the formation of helpful bacterial cultures and as the flora of the gut shifts, the gas may be inconvenient, but ultimately beneficial. Also, you can usually avoid these problems by ramping up the amount slowly.
As with ALL fiber supplements it is important to consult your physician or other health care provider. However, I have gotten good results with this product and it is relatively inexpensive. I believe it helped me get rid of my ulcerative colitis and reduce my cholesterol.
Lastly, I don't recommend the similar product by Yerba Prima that contains calcium. This tastes awful and will be difficult to keep up with for most people because of this. Instead I would supplement calcium separately. The ideal formulation that according to some research helps prevent colon cancer is calcium carbonate with Vitamin D added to improve absorbtion. This can cause constipation in some people and again, you will want to talk to your doctor before you take any supplements. An alternative to calcium carbonate is calcium citrate which is absorbed more readily and you can take it without Vitamin D and still get good absorbtion. However, you will have to swallow more pills.
If you absolutely must have a fiber supplement that tastes good, you might want to try Citrucel instead. It tastes a lot like Orange Tang and many physicians enthusiastically endorse it for patients who require or would benefit from a fiber supplement.
