With citrate as the "carrier" it is not necessary for the calcium to be taken at mealtime as the citrate changes into citric acid and provides the acid environment for proper absorption. Other types of Calcium need to be taken with a meal so that the stomach acid your body generates will allow for proper absorption. Kal has a good rep too.
