I got this because of the Carlson name (Carlson Labs has been around for a long time), the price and safety (tested for toxins).
It's often not easy to tell which is cheaper since different brands have different amounts of omega-3's per gel, so what I did was just calculate the cost per mg of omega-3 by dividing the price by the total mgs (number of servings multiplied by the omega-3 per serving). That way, you figure out which has the best value per mg. It didn't really matter to me what the monthly cost or monthly dosage cost was because there really isn't an absolute daily allowance (the recommended one is 1000 mgs per day) and I figure it's more normal/natural to have a varying amount daily anyway, but that's just me.
When shopping only for price, look for something which is on sale, buy enough stuff to get free shipping, and usually the larger bottles are cheaper per unit.
The number of gels in this bottle (300) is somewhat misleading because a serving size is 5 gels (a little over 1100mg for the 5 gels). And by the way, this bottle is a 2 month supply (300/5 = 60 day's dosage). It might be difficult to take 5 gels per day, but this is great for people who don't want to take a full 1100+ mg per day or want to spread out the dosage over breakfast to dinner. I also like this one because it doesn't have a lot of extra vitamins in it. You can get more information from the Carlson Labs website.
Taste: This is the biggie for most people. I happen to like fish oil flavor and have always crushed the capsule in my mouth even as a kid. But some people can't stand it. This one has a "slightly lemon" flavor and I can attest it's true, but people who are really sensitive to taste should try a small bottle first.
To summarize, I got this for the reputation, price and the fact that it's safe/pure. I think all of the above is important, especially safety. Don't get an unknown cheap brand that has mercury and PCB's in it.
2 week update: After a couple of weeks of chewing this I've found that this is the cod liver oil I like best. The fish taste is very mild to me and I like chewing up the gel capsule; with the lemon taste it's almost like a jelly bean I'm chewing.
