(More customer reviews)Calcium lactate was recommended by my veternarian a few years ago for a leg problem one of my older pups, she had a "knee" injury (for lack of medical terms). The vet had specifically recommended calcium lactate for its "absorbative" qualities and suggested not only giving it internally, but using it externally on the injury as well as it would be absorbed right through the skin into the bone.
It's also good for human use, and has those same absorbative qualities other calcium products do not have. I bought my first supply at a health food store (had a devil of a time finding it for awhile and that was the only relatively local place I could even locate it). I paid a good deal for it at the time and also recently when it was prescribed for my older pup again.
Now that my pup is even older, she's developed some arthritis and started showing signs of the canine version of osteoporosis. If giving this to your pet, check with your vet for dosage. I give her 1/4 capsule twice a day in food (according to weight) and she has started to hold her weight better, get around a LOT better, and the osteoporosis is not progressing and in fact, has appeared to regress. It has also helped with her teeth which she has started having some problems with because of her age. For partial capsule doses, I empty one capsule out on paper, divide it up with a sharp knife, wrap the individual doses in small squares of paper and attach the ones I am not using to the bottle with a thick rubber band wrapped around the bottle a few times.
There are other benefits as well, but I'm not a medical professional so won't go into them here. But it is doing a lot of good for my little elderly pup in a lot of different ways and I suspect, helping greatly in NOT using stronger medications for her elderly afflictions. For human or animal dosage, I always check with my doctor or vet (respectively) before putting any pills or capsules into my family's bodies (or into the bodies of my pets) and would recommend the same to anyone.
As far as this brand and purchasing here on Amazon, I am very happy with the quality, the short time it took to get here after ordering as well as the price. There are a few different brands of this on Amazon, but this was the best deal I found. And as always, having it delivered right to my door is just great and one of the reasons I keep shopping on Amazon.
