First of all I'm a little perplexed by the previous reviews mentioning adding "scoops" of this to some drink.... This is not a powder which needs scoops, this particular product is a capsule. Having said that the benefits of a loose powder form would be the same as a capsule. I prefer the capsules because if I go out to eat then I just pop them in my mouth, and don't have to worry about mixing powders in a restaurant.
I bought this to help increase my fiber consumption. I've read about all the benefits of fiber, including a decrease in cholesterol (I have high cholesterol and take a statin for it). I did not buy this for help with bowel movements.... no problem there. Because I was trying to lose about ten pounds and maintain my weight I wanted a way to increase my fiber intake without adding more food to my diet. I wanted to limit my sugar and fat intake so I wanted to find a source of "pure" fiber and these capsules seemed the way to go.
I've been taking this about four months now and my cholesterol level has improved. When I did my blood work (after taking these about three months) my "bad" cholesterol decreased and my "good" cholesterol increased. Even though I really had no problems with my bowel movements I did notice a change, they seemed better.
About the product itself. I choose this because it consists of only the psyllium seed husks and the capsule. Each serving (4 caps) has 8 calories, 2.2 grams of fiber and - 0 - sugar. No other ingredients. According to the instructions for Regularity you take 4 capsules 1 to 3 times per day with food and an 8 ounce glass of water. OR for Heart Health you take 5 capsules 3 times a day with food and an 8 ounce glass of water. So I take 5 capsules 3 times a day (with food and water). The label recommends that you swallow one capsule at a time. The label also suggests that you start with one serving per day then increase to 3 as needed.
When I first started taking it I was a little gassy. But after three weeks or so that went away. I ran out of the capsules for a few days and when I did start taking them again I was gassy again for a week or two.
Just to recap: the benefits to me are an increase in fiber, without adding fat or sugar to my diet (which helps me maintain my weight) and better cholesterol numbers.
